West Highland White Terriers(Westies)A Westie is a dog breed which originated from scotland. These dogs are known for their white coats and friendliness. These terriers were called the Poltalloch or the Roseneath terrier. They share common ancestry with the Cairn Terrier and the Dandie Dinmont. In the early 1900s, these terriers were bred to hunt for small animals. These dogs have muscular legs, which give them an advantage at running. They have a very strong bone structure for a dog of that size. These terriers only come in the colour white. Their white coats are soft on the inside but dense on the outer layer, their coats require regular grooming to look their best. They don't shed, but hair may come off while grooming them. They are roughly 28 cm (11 in) high and weigh roughly 7-8.5 kg (15-18 lb). They will follow the sleep patterns of their owners, as well as taking naps during the day. Westies are known to be prone to allergies and skin issues. Their ears are known to collect wax and oils, and infections can develop if water builds up. In order to properly look after your westie, there are measures which would help ensure he does not face irritation or discomfort of any type. You could bath him with soft skin shampoo to keep his skin hydrated and prevent skin issues. Also, clean his ears with cotton buds regularly. Another thing you could do is restrict him from eating certain kinds of foods. Elmo (my Westie) used to have very bad skin, and he would be constantly itching. We have solved this problem and he is extremely healthy and has no skin issues. To read about what we did to help him, look at the Elmo page. These dogs require a lot of care, but i would recommend them to any people who want a cute, obedient, gentle and smart dog.
